Session 5
Date: Tues. 4/14/09
Topics and Speakers:
Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology: Alfreda Stadlin
Introduction to Histology: Keyan Salari , MD/PhD candidate
Topic 1: Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology
Learning Objectives: After attending this session, the student should be able to:
- appreciate how anatomy contributes to an understanding of human physiology and disease Find out what major organ systems of the human body are involved in a disease
- appreciate the relationship between development and adult anatomy
- understand some basic concepts in developmental biology
- understand different levels of scale in anatomical studies and tools appropriate to different scales
- appreciate how anatomy contributes to an understanding of diabetes
- appreciate how histology contributes to an understanding of human physiology and disease
Key words: islet, pancreatic beta cell, lymphocyte
Assignment:
- "Anatomy of the Pancreas in Brief"
- "Histology of the Pancreas in Brief: PART I"
- "Histology of the Pancreas in Brief: PART II"
- Lange Physiology Ch. 19 Endocrine Function of the Pancreas and Regulation of Carbohydrate Metabolism -- Read section "Islet Cell Structure" (links on left panel of webpage)
- Endocrinology
An Integrated Approach,
by SS Nussey and
SA Whitehead: The
Endocrine Pancreas --
Read the section:
- Anatomical features of pancreatic islets in relation to hormone secretion and its control
- Histology Handout
Supplementary Resources:
Relevant Anatomy Textbook Chapters
The following material can be found in the Supplementary Reading folder on the IMed shelf in Lane Library; look at the original books at Lane Medical Library for better-quality illustrations.
- Wheater, Burkitt and Daniels,"Functional Histology" Churchill Livingstone Press; ch. 14: Gastrointestinal tract histology and anatomy.
- Ibid., ch. 15: Liver and pancreas anatomy.
- Three additional references, (Lumelsky et al, Bernard-Kargar et al, Edlund H), in the Supplementary Reading Folder
Relevant Medical School Videos
- Histology of endocrine pancreas. First 25 minutes explain basic models of cellular signaling pathways, similar to hormone lecture in Endocrine Physiology course; minutes 24-35 explain insulin and show islets, vasculature and individual cells with fluorescent antibody staining, light microscopy, and electron micrographs. A nice, basic diabetes review from minutes 35-40.
- Development of the gastrointestinal tract. From minutes 18-19 ventral pancreatic bud joins up with dorsal pancreas, rotation duct explanations
Websites
- Gray's Anatomy: Pancreas. Excellent review with graphics illustrating the structural anatomy of the pancreas
- Colo. State U: Functional anatomy of pancreas, physiology of pancreatic hormones
- Normal and abnormal islets of Langerhans from the Histology slide collection University of Utah
